The story had a start with certain facts which slowed down the pace of the story. The conversation was okay.
Since you have used Australian terms in your story let me add in Australia a thong refers to bathroom slippers also known as flip flops. I am not sure what John saw beneath her thong that made him run.

In addition to that, India has a population of 1.45 billion. If you count only the middle class that is about 650 million, equal to the entire population of Latin America, or double of that of total American population with an average income exceeding US$20K and even the poorest Indian has an average income of around $4800. Gold is not cheap here but costly and imported even though the jewelry is world class and exported world over.
