Wordsmiths Fiction Week 1: The Disappeared Leader
Assalam-o-Alaikum! |
---|

The storm subsided somewhat before dawn. Someone noticed a tiny island in the distance in the dim light. Everyone started to feel optimistic. They struggled to maneuver the wrecked ship in the direction of the island. They struggled for hours until they managed to tie it close to the coast. There was silence on the island. There were no humans or animals in the area and there were lots of trees and ancient stones. It appeared that no one had visited in a long time.
Despite their fatigue and fear the crew found bravery in Captain Umar. "We will live " he declared. Let's be together and cooperative. He assigned each person a minor duty. Some went in search of water and food. Some remained close to the ship to do minor repairs. The middle portion of the island was examined by Captain Umar and his assistant Faizan. They discovered odd dilapidated structures covered in verdant vegetation. The stones were marked with symbols and signs. It appeared to be a long-lost location but nobody knew what it was.

For three days life went on like this. But on the fourth morning everything changed.Captain Umar was not on the ship. His bag was missing and one lifeboat was also gone. The crew became worried. “Where could he go?” asked Amina the youngest crew member. “Why didn’t he tell us anything?” Faizan tried to stay calm. He formed a rescue team and started looking for the captain across the island. They checked all places jungle , caves , hills but there was no sign of him. It was as if Umar had disappeared in the air.
Everyone began to speculate. One of the weary employees Bilal remarked Perhaps he abandoned us Amina responded No he's not like that.We were always taken care of by Captain Umar. Some feared something had happened while others speculated that he might have gone to seek assistance. Faizan had trouble falling asleep that night. While strolling among the woods he noticed a faint blue glow emanating from the depths of the bush. Fearful and curious he followed.
He continued walking till he came to an ancient stone gate. The gate was shining faintly and the air around it felt weird.Captain Umar was standing there. Captain! Faizan yelled. Where did you go? We looked everywhere. Slowly Umar turned around. His expression was solemn but composed. He remarked Faizan I found something. This island is not like the others. It is concealing a secret. Faizan was perplexed. What are you discussing? We believed you were in danger or lost.
The stone gate was indicated by Captain Umar. This ancient civilization left behind these ruins. I touched a stone in the middle last night and it gave me visions images of a world beyond of this one. Faizan this gate is an entryway. A gateway. I saw historical figures. I was informed that this island travels through space and time. It called us here; we didn't simply discover it. Faizan was at a loss for words. So why didn't you inform us? Why didn't you say anything before leaving?
Umar however shook his head. This portal may lead to more knowledge perhaps even a means of assisting others. This seems to be my purpose right now. The shining gate opened and Captain Umar entered before Faizan could stop him. A glimmer of light appeared and he vanished. Faizan stood looking at the empty room for a long time. He went back to the crew and explained the situation. He was believed by some. Others didn't. In the hopes that Umar would return they remained on the island for a few more days. However he never did.

They were eventually saved by a passing cargo ship a month later. The malfunctioning radio has begun to transmit a faint signal. After a few years Faizan resumed his regular life. However he never forgot the blue light in the forest the stone gate or Umar. He occasionally heard Umar voice stating Not all journeys end where they begin when he closed his eyes. Some transport us outside of our familiar world.
