Wordsmiths Fiction Week 3 || Season 24 – The Last Photo
Assalam-o-Alaikum! |

Nadeesha enjoyed photographing wild creatures. She took her camera and ventured into the woods close to her village every weekend. Hours passed while she waited for the ideal shot in silence. She had captured images of a bird nursing its young a deer drinking water and a leopard yawning on her camera. She said to her brother "Today I will explore a new trail " just before daybreak. There's a secret pool buried deep in the forest I've heard. She left the house with a tiny bag and her camera.

However she did not return that evening. Her relatives kept waiting. Concerned they dialed for assistance. A search party ventured into the woods. They spent hours looking but all they could find was her camera resting next to an ancient oak. The final picture made their hearts race when they looked at the camera. It displayed a towering guy standing at the entryway of a little wooden hut. The figure had an odd appearance and the face was obscured. Ravi Nadeesha's younger brother was unable to sit still. He said to his parents "I'll go find her." She's in the wilderness somewhere. I am aware that she is still alive.

Along with a torch and some food Ravi had brought some pictures of Nadeesha. Trees stones and animal traces were among the hints he followed in the pictures until he spotted something far away. The hut in the picture was the identical one. The cabin had an aged appearance. The wood was cracked and black with vines growing on it. Ravi heard what seemed like someone whispering his name as he approached. He pushed the door open. It was cold and dark inside. There were dry leaves all over the floor. However there was a shining object in the corner. It wasn't just any mirror either. When he touched this mirror which resembled water it rippled.
The tall person suddenly materialized at the door. It wore a hood over its face and a long coat. Despite his fear Ravi remained steadfast. He said "Where is my sister?" The voice of the figure was deep and quiet. She noticed the lake. The water is enchanted. People are shown a different world. She approached too closely. and she's inside now. Ravi turned to face the mirror again. Inside he spotted Nadeesha lost and walking attempting to return. "Am I able to save her?" Ravi inquired. "Yes " the figure replied "but you have to replace her."

Ravi didn't hesitate. "Give her up. I'll remain. The figure gave a nod. From the mirror emerged a dazzling light. Nadeesha went outside and collapsed. Ravi vanished into the bright mirror. Near the hut Nadeesha awoke. Beside her was her camera. The hut had vanished. There were only trees and silence. With tears in her eyes she brought Ravi's picture home with her. She continues to visit the forest but she never again looks for the water. She photographs nature and occasionally she spots her brother's happy face watching over her in the reflection of the lake. Love gave the forest purpose but it also retained its secrets.
