Wordsmiths Fiction Week 6: The Mystery of Project Z | Steemit Challenge Season 24
Greetings, fellow Steemians!
Here we are in the sixth week of Season 24 of the Steemit Challenge, and once again, we’re diving into the world of fiction and imagination! This week’s prompt is something really exciting — a mysterious invention, a strange box, and a boy with a heart full of curiosity!
Let’s get into the story…

Dineth wasn’t such as kid in village. He could spend his time while others were playing cricket or chasing butterflies, in his late grandfather’s old lab. Science was something he loved and making small robots out of old junk and reading chemistry books and mixing coloured liquids that fizzed or popped in glass tubes.
It was a small metal box he found while cleaning the dusty shelves of the lab one quiet afternoon: rain tapped on the windows. On top was a silver switch and it had a sticky note affixed.
Project Z – Not to be tested. Not ready."
His heart skipped a beat and he froze on that one spot looking at the sky above. “He whispered What is this?” THE label clearly stated that this wasn’t good so this invention was dangerous but it only made Dineth more curious even. A time machine? Or maybe a device to talk to aliens? Answers were not provided in note.
He carefully took the box into his room, locked the door and looked it at. He didn’t sleep that night. He constantly was thinking about the mysterious box. The next day he pored over all his grandfather’s old notebooks looking for clues as to Project Z, but came up empty.

Days passed.
One stormy evening it was dark and the thunder was growing and he couldn’t fight it anymore. He flipped the switch, grabbed the box and took a long breath.
Nothing happened.
He sighed. He spoke the words aloud. ‘Maybe it’s broken’. Suddenly the box glowed with a blue set of lights. The walls of his room begun to shake and it began to hum softly.
We "Access granted. Transport begins on: 10… 9… 8… "
Dineth froze. He could hear his heart pounding. “Transport? He shouted out to them ‘To where?’ but there was no answer.

The room disappeared in a blink.
He opened his eyes and he was in some strange land. Above sky was purple. All trees were silver. Cars floated through the air. Small robots followed people like pets and they wore glowing suits.
His wrist now held up what looked like a box, stuck like a watch which spoke in a voice.
Welcome to Year 3025. ‘You’ve entered the future.”
Dineth gasped. He raced his mind. He had gone through time! Project Z was a success after all, his grandfather’s Project Z, yet why did he write “Not ready”?
Soon he knew why. In this world machines controlled everything. No one talked to each other. They spoke only to screens. Robots taught children. No one ever played outside. But this was lonely future.
Dineth missed his world. The sound of rain. The smell of books. The laughter of friends.
“Can I go back?” He asked looking at the device.
Which made voice replied one trip only. You may choose what to take with you.”
Dineth thought very hard. He then said: ‘I will deliver a message.’
So he recorded a video about what he saw on the beauty of science and the dangers of science. Technology should never stop human connection from taking place, he said and progress seemed destined to walk hand-in-hand with kindness.
Finally, he pressed a button and everything was dark.
On waking up he was again in his room. Cold and quiet was box. Now storm had stopped.
He was a man and he was different.
After that day Dineth continued to build robots and liked science, but on the same time he planted trees, played with his friends and told stories. Now he knew that the future has nothing to do with what we create, but is about how we live and how we treat each other.
Moral of the story:
Curiosity leads to discovery, but wisdom teaches us how to use it.
Let’s build a future full of love, not just machines.
