Dineth, very keen on science, spent hours building robots and mixing strange liquids in test tubes in his grandfather's lab. And also spent time reading the science books his grandfather left behind.
One day, while organizing his grandfather’s lab, he found a small metal box with a switch and a note.
"Project Z — Not to be tested. Not ready."
Dineth was surprised, and his eyes lit up with excitement.
What was Project Z? A time travel device? A teleporter? The note didn't mention anything. He took that box and came to his room. He locked the door. Then checked the box with curiosity.
He has no idea. From the next day, he read more of his grandfather's inventions. But always the mystery of the box haunted his mind. One rainy evening, he flipped the switch. But nothing happened. He was disappointed. He thought it was broken. But when he turned to leave, the box lit up and made a soft humming sound. The room was filled with blue light. The walls started to shake. Suddenly, a deep voice came from the box.
Access granted. Beginning transport in 10... 9... 8...
Based on the given story above, Project Z is a mysterious invention that was created by Dineth's grandfather, kept secretly, and marked with a warning: "Not to be tested. Not ready." What this means it is either good or bad.
Dineth was overshadowed by the light that shone from the box. Immediately, the room vanished. There were no bookshelves, no chair, no journals, no lab, etc., just a cascade of blue, a sensation floating through water without the wetness, and a rush of cold air or water that whispered in his ears like a voice that he does hear from his dream.
Not with an injury, but with a strange softness like that was as if the world was crushing him on purpose. He stood up, brushing himself off, only for him to find out that the floor beneath him was glowing glass and above a sky that looked real. Dineth was inside some kind of dome that seemed to be floating up above a sprawling city of impossibility.
He got a message, "Welcome, user 0001: Legacy Access is approved"
The voice he heard echoed around him, which was the same he heard from the box, which this time around was so loud.
Dineth whispered "Where am I like this"
"Where you are is the Nexus which is the core between time. Built by project Z. Final phase. Unlocking inheritance".
From where he was standing, a pedestal rose from the floor, and on the pedestal, he saw a hologram of his grandfather as it appeared in front of him. Not an old man, but a young man in a lab coat, smiling at him. Seeing this Dineth gasped.
The recording said, "If you are listening to this, then you did what I never dared". Project Z was built by me to explore the when behind everything, not just the future and past, but forgotten timelines, broken ones, and those that never came into existence.
Dineth's heart beat high.
The hologram of his grandfather continued. "I sealed it away, hoping someone smarter, braver would one day complete what I started. Project Z doesn't just travel through me. It allows you to rewrite realities:
1998 | The Accident that Never Happened |
---|---|
2072 | The Rise of the Machines |
2120 | The Earth that Moved |
3011 | First Contact with the Others |
He stared in awe. Dineth wasn't just in the future. Dineth was in a hub that connected all possibilities together.
"Choose wisely"," the voice said to him. "Because every step you take echoes forever".
And with that, the paths started to dim, one after another. Dineth had to decide this time around. Dineth took a deep breath, stepped forward, and touched his hands on the one that called his heart.
He touched the year his grandfather disappeared and he was gone when the platform lit up. This time he was part of the design and not as a passenger.

Well done but little more conversation or drama in the end could have make the story even better.
