Steemit Challenge S26-w5 : Second chance romance

in #fiction-s26wk523 hours ago

Dennis sat down in his office overlooking the city skyline, the glow of success around him but the weight of emptiness inside him. His nice suit, the corner of his office, and the praise of society meant nothing to him. Behind everything that he has achieved was the reflection of one evening that he had, which was an evening with Jenny.

Jenny had been more than a coworker; she was the only woman who once made him feel alive. But one night, a conversation about work pressure turned into a heated argument among them. Words were unfiltered, spoken shape. Jenny's voice had trembled, her eyes had watered, and then she walked out of Dennis's life.

For years they kept seeing each other like an unwelcome guest and feeling regret.

On a certain morning, fate struck. The human resources (HR) department informed Dennis that a new consultant is going to join the firm to lead a project that's critical for them to handle. As the door to the HR office opened, Dennis froze. Jenny.

Jenny had changed, yet her presence pulled the air from the room. She briefly glanced at Dennis, her expression calm but distant, as though the storm of their past no longer mattered to her.

They worked side by side for days, exchanging only professional words. Dennis felt the old wall between the two of them, but his pride and the unhealed wounds didn't allow him to apologize. On one faithful evening, as the office got quiet, Dennis found the courage to speak with Jenny.

He softly said, Jenny and paused, her eyes searching his. "Dennis, I waited for your apology years ago. But silence spoke louder than your regret"

Jenny's words pierced Dennis deeper than even the corporate battle.

During a late meeting the following week, their discussion turned unexpectedly personal. Jenny agreed their arguments had crushed her because she had believed in Dennis not just as a leader but as a person she could trust.

Jenny confessed and said, "I wasn't even angry at your words". "I was only hurt that you didn't fight for us."

Dennis bent his head. "I thought success would fill the emptiness you left. I was wrong. Nothing has ever mattered to me since you left."

There was a little silence, heavy yet tender. She finally sighed. "People change, Dennis. Have you?".

"I have," he whispered to Jenny. "This time around, I don't want perfection. I just want us to be together".

She cracked at that moment. Forgiveness didn't come easily, but the possibility of it hung in the air. She smiled faintly, not a promise but a beginning. They both walked out of the office side by side, just as they used to walk out before they had an argument.

Dennis feels relieved, free, and happy that his loneliness for years is coming to an end. At that very moment, he felt so happy and asked Jenny for a dinner party where they could spend time together. Jenny agreed to his proposal.

Feedback

  • You introduced Dennis's loneliness at the beginning, but you didn't carry that theme strongly throughout the story. His inner emptiness could have influenced his actions more deeply.
