Nasturtium flower
The nasturtium! That is a cheerful flower. You see it everywhere in the summertime, hanging over a pot or spilling out of a window box.
First, look at the leaves they are round, like little green shields or tiny water lily pads, but they hold the water in a way that makes it roll right off. Very clever.
The flowers are the big show. They come in these bright, almost shouting colors: yellows, oranges, and deep, rich reds. They are funnel-shaped, like little trumpets, with a bit of a spur sticking out the back for the nectar. They are very decorative, you know?
But the best part, the thing you might not know about, is that the whole thing is edible! Yes, you can eat the flowers and the leaves. They taste very pikant, very peppery, almost like cress or a strong radish. We often use the petals as a garnish in a salad to give it a nice color and a spicy kick.
