Eton Mess - 12 August 2025

Eton Mess and Latte.
When I went to a cafe with a couple of friends the other day I felt a bit adventurous and instead of ordering the usual ‘savoury’ sandwich or panini I went for a dessert.
I asked for an Eton Mess which according to that same page is :
a traditional English dessert consisting of a mixture of strawberries or other berries, meringue, and whipped cream. First mentioned in print in 1893, it is commonly believed to originate from Eton College …
Although my dessert was a nice change to my routine, it was a bit too sweet for my liking. To be honest it was basically a scoop of ice-cream, with bits of broken meringue, whipped cream and pink fruit syrup on top. There were no summer fruits as you can see in the only photo I took. It was nice but I don’t think it should be called Eton Mess because it didn’t contain the right ingredients.
I was happy with my decaff latte but I will not be asking for another Eton Mess as it felt overpriced at £5.95 or around 60 Steem. Apparently the normal chef was out of town that day so perhaps the replacement chef didn't know about that dessert.
Despite the limitations of my dessert I enjoyed it because I chatted with my friends who both chose banana split instead. Perhaps I should have chosen the same.
I did find a recipe on how to make Eton Mess on You Tube :
Sadly the video doesn't tell you the amounts or for how long to bake the meringue mixture in the oven. I think the trickiest bit is making the meringue to reach the correct consistency and baking it for over an hour at a very low temperature. I then searched and found the full recipe here.
Thank you for reading.
