What do you understand by osteoporosis?

Osteoporosisis a progressive disease that make the bones lose density and quality over time, which means that they are more fragile and likely to break. It often advances silently over several years, with a diagnosis often made after the breaking of a bone, typically in the hip, spine and wrist.

  • Key Points:

Osteoporosis: The bones get brittle (lose minerals, especially calcium), structure, and strength.

Risk of fracture: Minor falls or stress can result in fractures.

More prevalent among elderly: In particular in post-menopausal women due to decrease in estrogen.

Silent disease: It frequently has no symptoms until a fracture occurs.

  • Causes and Risk Factors:

Aging

Hormonal fluctuations (such as in menopause)

Lack of calcium or vitamin D

Sedentary lifestyle

Cigarette Smoking and Heavy Alcohol Drinking

Some drugs (such as corticosteroids)

  • Prevention and Treatment:

It's so important to get enough calcium and vitamin D

Weight-bearing exercises

Drugs (such as bisphosphonates)

Not smoking and moderate drinking

Here are a few of the most common things that can cause osteoporosis:

I. Aging – With age, the formation of new bones reduces and the bone loss accelerates.

II. Menopause – For women, the decrease in estrogen following menopause leads to bone loss.

III. Calcium and vitamin D deficiency – These vitamins are critical for strong bones.

IV. Physical inactivity – Not using your bones makes them weak.

V. Smoking –Nicotine is bad for bones; one reason is that it interferes with the body’s ability to absorb calcium.

VI. Drinking too much – Alcohol can interfere with bone formation and the calcium balance.

VII. Some Drugs — If you take corticosteroids (such as prednisone) for months at a time, the medication can weaken your bones.

VIII. Hormonal imbalance – An imbalance in hormones, such as hyperthyroidism or low testosterone, can cause bone loss.

IX. Family history – If one of your family members had osteoporosis, it could be put you at risk for it since it is a genetic condition.

X. Eating disorders – Anorexia or bulimia may lead to decreased nutrient consumption and bone density.


how can you diagnose it or its symptoms?

Great question! Osteoporosis is frequently referred to as a “silent disease” because it generally doesn’t produce apparent symptoms until a fracture occurs. But here are how it can be diagnosed and what signs to look for:

  • Diagnosis of Osteoporosis:

I. Bone Density Test (DEXA scan)

This is the most accurate and widely used test. Material BMD testing – is used, typically of the hip and spine.

The findings can inform you about how strong your bones are and your risk of a fracture.

II. X-rays

Can show fractures or bone loss but usually not early osteoporosis.

III. Past medical history and physical examination

Questions the doctor might ask include those related to risk factors, family history, previous fractures, and lifestyle.

IV. Blood and urine tests

These could be for underlying reasons such as calcium or vitamin D deficiency, or alternatively metabolic conditions.

  • Symptoms of Osteoporosis:

Usually no symptoms early on

Fractures from minor falls or injuries — common sites: hip, wrist, spine

Back pain — can be caused by fractured or collapsed vertebrae

Loss of height over time

Bending forward or having a “hump back” (kyphosis)

If you have risk factors or symptoms like these, it’s also a good idea to make an appointment to see a health care provider for an evaluation.

  • Treatment of Osteoporosis:

I. Medications:

Bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate, risedronate) — slow the loss of bone and lower the risk of fractures.

SERMs — selectively act like estrogen in protecting bone.

Hormonal replacement therapy (HRT)Generally in postmenopausal women (weighing the risks and benefits).

Denosumab — a drug that slows bone loss by blocking bone resorption.

Teriparatide — a parathyroid hormone analogue that stimulates new bone growth (for severe cases).

II. Supplements:

Calcium and Vitamin D, which help improve stamina as well maintain healthy bone mineral density.

III. Pain management:

For fractures or bone pain, pain relief and physical therapy may be recommended by doctor.


  • Prevention of Osteoporosis:

I. Diet:

Eat foods high in calcium (dairy foods, leafy green vegetables, fortified foods).

Get enough vitamin D (sunlight or supplements if necessary).

II. Exercise:

Regular weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening physical activity (walking, jogging, weightlifting).

III. Lifestyle:

Avoid smoking.

Limit alcohol consumption.

IV. Fall prevention:
