What do you understand by osteoporosis?

Bone disease such as osteoporosis is very common in people over 40. It silently weakens bones and makes them fragile which means they are more likely to break. Unfortunately, many people only find out after having a painful fracture.

Aging, hormonal changes (such as menopause) and family history are the cause of this condition. But we also need to think about daily choices, like what we eat, how much we move, smoke or drink too much alcohol which can also lead to increased bone loss.

Osteoporosis is much more than medical terms. Things like lifting groceries or a fall become scary.

write some common causes of it.

After 40, bone naturally thins with time – a book naturally losing its pages. In women, the hormonal change at menopause (estrogen dropping) speeds this up. Same changes also occur to men when their testosterone levels decrease.

What matters, too, is family history: If parents were tall, so will you be. If they broke bones easily, so might you. But day to day habits matter. The bone strength gets drained a lot faster due to poor nutrition, couch potato living, smoking and heavy drinking.

Great, great, what the good news? You don’t have it all in your control. Keeping your skeleton strong comes from eating calcium rich meals, regular walks and saying no to cigarettes. Soon you will thank yourself for this.

how can you diagnose it or its symptoms?

Many people call osteoporosis the "silent thief" since there are often no early symptoms - until a bone fracture happens. It is common for older people to realize they have osteoporosis after a small fall leads to a fracture.

A doctor uses a fast and painless bone density scan (DEXA) to check how solid the bones are. It’s a bit like an X-ray showing how heavy or dense your bones are.
Other warning signs are:

  • Reduced height over the years (as a result of spine fractures)
  • A posture where the person looks bent or crouched
  • Pain in the back can happen if one or more vertebrae sink into another.

Testing early makes it much easier to catch problems which is important for women age 65 or over, as well as anyone with possible risk factors.

Its treatment and prevention?

Nutrition plays a big role in avoiding osteoporosis. Both calcium (found in dairy, leafy greens) and vitamin D (produced by sunlight, fatty fish) must be present. Active exercises involving the whole body such as walking and dancing, build strong bones, while being smoke-free and using alcohol moderately is better.

Doctors may treat bone conditions with bone-oxygenating drugs (bisphosphonates) and hormone medicines when appropriate. Watch out for falls - work on balance by doing yoga or tai chi and repair or remove anything in your home that can make you trip.

Strengthen your bones today and you reduce your risk of being active and fracture-free later in life. Starting to look after your pet when it’s young or grown up is always the right moment.

Now i am going to invite my friends @ulfatulrahmah l, @josepha and @afzalqamar to participate in this contest.
