My Relationship With Sleep

INTRODUCTION

Happy weekend from me@destinedhanik from Nigeria to all steemians of healthy Steem, I hope everyone is in good health. Today, I'll be contesting on something very important to our health, which is sleep, and all thanks to @abdullahw2 who was thoughtful enough to bring about this topic, so take a walk with me as I talk on this.

WHAT IS SLEEP?

Sleep is a period of rest where we lie down and are partially conscious, and in that period of time, our bodies is allowed to repair tissues, consolidate energy and regulate hormones. It allows our bodies to rest, repair and restore itself.

How many hours of sleep do you usually get each night, and do you think it’s enough?

We have seven days in a week and 24 hours each day. Medically or health wise, one is expected to have at least 7 hours of sleep each night. At least 3 times each week, I have at least 7 hours of sleep, though sometimes the sleep is interrupted due to using the restroom at night. But for about 4 days, I always have at most 5 hours of sleep, and that is because I wake up to work online at night as the network is better at that time and the night data is cheaper. I don't think the hours I sleep is enough abd this takes its toll on me as I always have eye pains and headache due to shortage of sleep.

In my sleeping state

Do you follow any sleep routine (like reading, meditation, avoiding screens)?.

On few days when I'm extremely tired, when once I lie on the bed, I easily sleep. But on other days, I watch movies or read novels before falling asleep. I can't fall asleep with the lights in the room on or with the disturbance of mosquitoes. So I go under a mosquito net to have an effective sleep.

What disturbs your sleep the most? (noise, stress, mobile, late-night eating, etc.)

What disturbs my sleep the most is frequent urination at night due to either eating late at night or drinking too much water at night. Sometimes, the noise of the phone ringing can also disturb my sleep. The noise of the mosquito or mosquito bite itself can also disturb my sleep and finally, too much heat can disturb my sleep.

Negative impacts of not taking enough sleep

Sleep is very important to good health and not having enough sleep as a person generally has a negative impact on one's health.

• Not having enough sleep can lead to the breakdown of one's system, as sleep is a period for one to rest ones body. The body is like a car and if it is not maintained by sleeping, it will eventually break down.

• Lack of sleep can make someone to be in a bad mood, anxious and depressed.

• Sleep helps one overcome stress. The best way to reduce or overcome stress is by sleeping after a stressful day. One wakes up feeling refreshed.

• Without enough sleep, the brain can start to eat itself, this means that it breaks down it's own cells in order to cope with lack of restoration.

• Lack of sleep can make one overweight and also lead to diabetes.

• Lack of adequate sleep can cause hear disease and stroke.

Positive impacts of taking enough sleep on our health.

• Having enough or adequate sleep makes your immune system strong making it difficult for you to easily fall sick.

• Sleep helps keep the heart healthy reducing the risk of heart failure and also regulating your blood pressure.

• Sleep helps sharpen one's memory. If one finds it difficult to retain information especially when one is preparing for exams, the best thing is to sleep and when one wakes up, the memory gets sharpened.

• Sleep helps repair tissues in the body and new cells are built.

• Sleep improves mental health.

• Having adequate sleep helps improve attention, also helps in problem solving skills and in decision making.

• Sleep helps us look younger, it heals wounds quickly and it affects every part of our bodies positively.

Hello my friend,

It's amazing to have a wonderful piece of write up from you!.

Sleep is by far one of the most essential thing needed for human existence. It is put in place by God for a reason, which is purposely for rest. However, circumstances tend to derail Us humans from having enough sleep.

Yes, just like you have said that sleep is necessary at least 7 hours a day for an adult, most of us don't even make it up that far. They are days I sleep at most 2 hours or I don't even sleep until all. Depending on the amount of work I have found that day.

It's quite draining but sometime we just have to catch up with pressing needs. However, in order to balance that, I often make sure after prolonged postponement of sleep schedule, I take off a day purposely for sleep. In that aspect I am a bit closer tool covering what I have been missing.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of work. I really love it and it's just points in a lot of things we need to know about sleep.

@rafk, thanks so much for your contribution. Sometimes, even remembering your account balance can deprive you of sleep.
