There are some non-curable conditions for which the patients need to continue taking medicine for a long period, in many cases, lifelong! It's quite important to continue the prescribed medicines as instructed without imposing own decision! Some people, however, are quite good at not listening to the doctor! In some instances, a situation puts a patient in a situation where he/she can't continue the medicines! As a result, the disease worsens or flares up!
An expatriate visited me recently. She was on methotrexate (MTX) for a long time, for rheumatism. The condition was under control. She returned from vacation and somehow, didn't bring her medicine. Being without MTX for three weeks, her rheumatism flared up and the pain/inflammation increased to such an extent that she couldn't do daily activities. Being unable to bear the pain, she decided to visit a doctor here. Seeing previous documents, I added that important medicine, along with a few other medicines!
Another group of patients I most commonly see in my chamber is hypertensive and diabetic patients who stopped their medicines on their own. This is quite a dangerous habit. With medicine, when blood sugar and blood pressure come to normal values, they think that they are okay. They stop the medicines and later come with very high BP or high blood sugar! The risk of stroke and heart attack is higher for this group of patients!
