While wandering around an ordinary market in one corner of Dhaka, my eyes were caught. While visiting a local spice shop, I suddenly came across two new types of pickles—garlic tamarind pickle and palm tamarind pickle. Both the names seemed new, and the taste was also quite surprising. For pickle lovers, this could be the door to a different experience.
Garlic Tamarind: A Pairing of Spices and Sourness
Garlic is already an integral part of Bengali cooking. But when that garlic mixes with sour tamarind, along with the aroma of mustard, red chili powder, and roasted spices—then it becomes a wonderfully tangy, sweet-sour pickle. At first taste, you can understand that this is not an ordinary garlic pickle at all. It is like a wonderful combination of the strong aroma of garlic and the intense sour taste of tamarind.
Local shopkeepers said that this garlic-tamarind pickle is made using local garlic, which is first lightly fried to soften it. Then, local tamarind juice, ginger-garlic paste, chili and fenugreek are mixed. Mustard oil is used for preservation. The balance of pungency and sourness in the taste makes it truly unique.
Date Tamarind: A wonderful combination of sweet and sour flavors
Another new name — Date Tamarind Pickle. A charming combination of the sweetness of dates and the sourness of tamarind. On one hand, the natural sweetness of dates, on the other hand, the sour and tangy taste of tamarind—the two have created such a pickle that once you taste it, you want to eat it again and again.
Ripe local dates and pitted tamarind are used to make this pickle. A little sugar, chaat masala and dry chili powder are added. For those who do not like salt at all, but were looking for a pickle with a sweet and sour taste, this can be ideal.

They are also chewy and fun. Both foods change any my meal. We put them on savory dishes. They are great with cheese, too. These foods show off old cooking styles. We should taste them often.
