Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 10:13-15

We saw that Far'oh (Pharaoh) was ready to let them go last week. Then he started to haggle about which ones of them would be going out. When Moshe (Moses) had said "everyone" Far'oh lost it and said, "Only the men can go!" and he tossed Moshe out. Now it is time for action, yet again.

Moshe went out and stretched his staff over the land and God brought a wind to bring in the locusts. Today's verses describe the devastation that ensued. They covered the land like a dark cloud and ate anything that was still there from the hail that had fallen previously. Not one green thing was left alive including plants, trees, fruit, and God said that this was the worst of its kind that ever was or ever would be.

It seems that Far'oh is flexing his power as the ruler, and he was all powerful in the land, but God shows him that he does not control the bigger things. It is a battle of a little man against an Almighty God. I guess you could call it a battle of super powers, though non nuclear.

English

So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and YHVH brought an east wind upon the land all that day and all that night. When it was morning, the east wind had brought the locusts. The locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and settled on the whole country of Egypt, such a dense swarm of locusts as had never been before, nor ever will be again. They covered the face of the whole land, so that the land was darkened, and they ate all the plants in the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Not a green thing remained, neither tree nor plant of the field, through all the land of Egypt.
