The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 12, Post #5

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 12:20-23

We start off the reading today with the tail end of what God was saying to Moshe (Moses) when he was instructing him on what to tell the people. Now, we will transition to the actual telling of that to the people.

Moshe called all the respected elders of the people to tell them what must happen now and why. He tells them to select their lambs according to what each can eat, kill the lamb and use the blood in the following way. Take a hyssop branch, dip it in blood, v'heegah'eTem (you shall touch) it to the lintel and to sh'Tay ham'zooZote (the two doorposts) of the place where you will stay tonight. Then they were to go inside and not come out until morning.

I am saying that this will be like a deadly, one night only, pandemic! Lock-downs, only these lock-downs will work and should not be disobeyed. The hyssop also has some interesting parallels in that Yeshua was given vinegar to drink while on the cross using a hyssop branch, the Lamb of God, whose blood was being spilt, and the hyssop is mentioned in that scripture. Food for thought.

Returning to the story...

I had seen movies about this and read English translations/interpretations of this part of the story. Some interpretations say, "I will send the destroyer" and others say that Elohim will go through Mitsraim (Egypt). Here is what the Hebrew says. To me it reads a bit better when you use The Nfame that is clearly included in the Torah scroll.

Moshe then finishes telling them what the Creator had to say. They must stay inside for YHVH will pass through to strike down the Mistsraim (Egyptians) and when he sees the blood on the lintel and sh'Tay ham'zooZote, YHVH will pass over the door. He will not allow ha-mash'Cheet (the one destroying) - interpreted "destroyer* - to enter your houses to strike you.

On an unrelated topic, yet relative to one of the words you just learned, the above photo shows a little item which is required to be hung on the door post of all people of Jewish belief. It is called a Mezuzah and it contains a tiny scroll of the "Ten Words" or "Ten Things" which were written by the finger of Elohim on the Mountain of God. We will see those events and read about the
requirements later in this book and the next couple books after that.

Today's reading

English

You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwelling places you shall eat unleavened bread."
Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, "Go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans, and kill the Passover lamb. Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. For YHVH will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, YHVH will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.
