The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 12, Post #9
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 12:38-42
We saw the people receiving anything they asked from the Mitsraim (Egyptians) as they left Mitsraim (Egypt) last week. Yes, the same word in Hebrew describes the people of and the state of Egypt. You would find similar crossovers in other languages.
Today, we see that a "mixed multitude" left with them. What people do not realize about the Israeli culture is that they accept anyone that wants to join them. They are called sojourners and they are welcomed. Today, Israel has Arabs and Muslims in their government. They are citizens and have the same rights and power of the native born Israelis.
The text says that they left quickly. They had not made preparations and they took their bread with them, not having time to let it rise. Last week, we heard that the mitsraim did not want the Hebrews to stay even one more minute for fear of their God, thinking they too would be killed by Him.
Finally, we see that they had been there exactly 430 years, to the day. This night will be remembered throughout all generations is what God orders.

A mixed multitude also went up with them, and very much livestock, both flocks and herds. And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough that they had brought out of Egypt, for it was not leavened, because they were thrust out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves.
The time that the people of Israel lived in Egypt was 430 years. At the end of 430 years, on that very day, all the hosts of YHVH went out from the land of Egypt. It was a night of watching by YHVH, to bring them out of the land of Egypt; so this same night is a night of watching kept to YHVH by all the people of Israel throughout their generations.
