Gauri Sankhar Himal

Gauri Sankhar Himal is one of the most beautiful and sacred mountains of Nepal, located in the Rolwaling Himal range along the border of Nepal and Tibet (China). It stands at an elevation of 7,134 meters (23,406 ft) and is the second-highest peak of the Rolwaling range, after Melungtse.

The mountain holds deep spiritual and cultural significance. The name Gauri Sankhar is derived from Hindu mythology: Gauri represents Goddess Parvati, and Shankar represents Lord Shiva. Local people believe that the peak symbolizes the divine union of Shiva and Parvati, making it a sacred mountain. Because of this, climbing attempts were restricted for many years.

Geographically, Gauri Sankhar lies between the Rolwaling Valley and the Khumbu region. The mountain is known for its twin summits: the northern peak (Shankar) and the southern peak (Gauri). Its steep ridges, icy slopes, and technical climbing challenges make it a highly respected mountain among mountaineers.

The first successful ascent was made in 1979 by an American-Nepali expedition, led by John Roskelley and Dorje Sherpa. Since then, only a few expeditions have succeeded because of the mountain’s difficulty and frequent avalanches.

For trekkers, the Rolwaling Valley trek and routes towards the Tashi Lapcha Pass provide stunning views of Gauri Sankhar Himal. Its scenic beauty, combined with cultural richness and legends, makes it one of the most admired peaks in Nepal.
