RE: One American Indian Tradition Making A Comeback Plus Z.S. Liang's Painting

in #history6 years ago

Today I am bringing the kids to do some cultural crafts. It is family wellness week and I just messaged the Beaver House to see if it was ok that we go but with late arrival and she told me what we will be doing. And guess what that is???!!! Wooden baby carriers!!! I had no idea and I kid you not, this is exactly what we are doing. I'm so stoked and how funny it is that this is what you've been talking about 😁😁😁

haha! THAT is too amazing! How cool is that? It should be a wonderful time for you guys, I'm thrilled.
I guess what I read was correct, that they are making a comeback!
What is the Beaver House, a native tribe run organization?

Very cool!

Yes, the Beaver House is a tribe organization although they welcome all tribes, they even welcome non tribe people that want to be part of it, it's awesome.

Howdy again foxyspirit! And what is their main purpose, the Beaver House? Many things like education about their culture?

Good question. I would say yes but because they are independent... Or were independent (I have to check on that), we weren't hearing much about it. But now they are starting to grow and are doing amazing things. Last winter they did 13 moons sweats for the first time. They will be doing pow wows as well (which is awesome because it also means less traveling for me since it's closer) and they just opened their healing center using cultural healing and also modern, is what I understood. This month is packed with a lot of activity, full moon teachings, language gatherings, drummings and sharings. It really is the place to be.

That is so amazing! And it's close to you? Did you say you went through the sweat lodge training or experience? I don't know what you call it. lol.

A healing center using traditional tribal methods as well as modern! I've never heard of anything like that.

I went through the experience. An amazing one at that. It was.... It was... Like... I can't describe it in the way that most people would believe. Its... definitely out of this world that's for sure.

The pow wows I've been to I had to travel a bit over 3hrs to get there so yes this one is much closer if they do hold one.

The healing center I would have to check to be 100% sure on being modern but for sure it is their traditional healings involved and I am looking forward to that!

Howdy today foxyspirit! you are learning so much and are going to continue learning so much! That's exciting. I haven't researched the sweat lodge ceremony or experience but I was under the impression that it was part of a training regimine for a medicine man or woman or something like that. Does that sound remotely accurate? Or was yours just a purification ritual or something? How long did that last?

I guess it depends on tribes. We had an elder medicine man run the sweat. For the sweat ceremony that we did, we hold prayer, songs, druming too, and spiritual offerings. We share wisdom and can also ask for wisdom. It is a place for healing as well. Everything is kept in the sweat lodge.

I can't say how long it lasts as we can't wear anything with metal inside. So I guess the length depends on the medicines being used and how many grandfather's are being used as well. I suggest looking it up, there's a lot to it. Every place is different. We had 36 grandfather's and some people can go quite high in numbers. Although I don't think I can handle more than 36 because it was definitely extremely hot for me!
