On 13 December 1915, Balthazar Johannes Vorster, was born in Jamestown as the 13th child of a family of 14 children.
He became Prime Minister of South Africa on 13 September 1966. He served in the cabinet of Hendrik Verwoerd, the father of apartheid.
John Vorster was awarded honorary doctorates by the universities of Stellenbosch, Pretoria, Potchefstroom and the Orange Free State.
John Vorster was awarded the Decoration of Meritorious Service on 24 March 1975, the highest award a South African can receive.
