Tips for Caring for Rattan

Many people choose rattan for home furnishings because it's strong, resilient, and flexible. Rattan also gives a natural appearance and has a unique (exotic) appeal.
To ensure your rattan furniture and furnishings are more durable and long-lasting, here are some tips on how to properly care for it.
These tips begin with the steps from the moment the rattan is harvested. This step, of course, is only performed by rattan farmers in Kalimantan.
As a consumer or user of rattan products, it's impossible to take action right from the harvest. However, proper rattan care is essential from the moment it's harvested. Here are some tips for caring for rattan:

1.Rattan Selection and Harvesting
Choose rattan that is mature enough (usually 6–8 years old) to ensure strength and flexibility.
Harvest during the dry season, as the moisture content is lower and easier to preserve.
2.Cleaning and Boiling
After harvesting:
Peel off the outer skin if necessary (for some types of rattan).
Boil the rattan in salt water or a borax and borate solution (a mixture of anti-fungal and anti-pest agents) for 30–60 minutes.
This boiling process kills any insects or fungi that may be harboring inside the rattan stem.
After boiling, the rattan is then air-dried in a shady area (out of direct sunlight) until completely dry. Avoid drying in direct sunlight, as it can crack or warp.
3.Additional Preservation
Once dry, it can be coated with an anti-termite and anti-fungal agent (usually borax-based).
You can also apply coconut oil, eucalyptus oil, or natural polish to make it more weather-resistant and shiny.

4.Finishing
Sand the surface to make it smooth.
It can be painted or applied with clear varnish or melamine for extra protection (especially for indoor use).
For outdoor use, it's best to use waterproof paint with UV protection.
5.Routine Maintenance
Clean regularly with a dry or damp cloth (not too wet).
Avoid exposure to rain or direct sunlight.
For mold or stains, clean with a mixture of water and white vinegar.
If the rattan starts to dry out or crack, re-oil it with natural oil.
Special Tips:
If you have rattan furniture, don't store it in a consistently damp and dark area, as it can quickly develop mold.
For chairs and other furniture, it's recommended to provide cushioning to prevent the weight from directly impacting the rattan.
