Tommo Village is Ready to Become Mamuju's Leading Tourist Village
The community of Tommo Village, Mamuju, West Sulawesi, proposed the development of a tourist village to the Deputy Minister of Tourism (Wamenpar), Ni Luh Puspa. The community expressed their need for religious facilities, village incentives, and human resource training to the Deputy Minister, who was visiting the village.
In response to the request, the Deputy Minister emphasized that his office would coordinate with the Mamuju Regional Government. According to her, concrete steps will be jointly developed to ensure the development of Tommo Village, benefiting both the community and the local economy.
One approach is to turn local religious rituals into a tourist attraction. "This village has great potential to attract visitors from various regions of Indonesia," said Ni Luh in Mamuju.
This visit was historic because Ni Luh Puspa was the first Deputy Minister of Tourism to visit Tommo Village. The community welcomed her enthusiastically, given that the village was founded in 1983 and has a history of Balinese transmigration.
Tommo Village is now home to a diverse range of ethnicities, including Balinese, Bugis, Mandar, Javanese, Sundanese, and Toraja. This diversity makes the village unique, especially with its two main religious events: Nyepi and Ngaben.
The ogoh-ogoh tradition on the eve of Pengerupukan before Nyepi, for example, has long been a tourist attraction. Furthermore, the mass Ngaben procession, held every three years, offers a unique experience for visitors from outside the region.

Therefore, the Deputy Minister of Tourism hopes that local residents won't need to travel all the way to Bali to witness the cremation ceremony. "Just come to Tommo Village," he emphasized.
Ni Luh hopes the local government can assist in village preparation by establishing a Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis). This is because the tourism village program aligns with the Merah Putih Village/Sub-district Cooperative, a priority program of the central government.
"Of course, this must be done jointly by the community, local government, and central government," he said. The Deputy Minister is confident that Tommo Village can become a new tourism icon in Mamuju if all parties work together to make it happen.
Mamuju Regent Sitti Sutinah Suhardi expressed her appreciation for the Deputy Minister of Tourism's visit to Tommo Village. "I ask for your support so this village can quickly become a tourist destination so the local economy can improve," she said.
