Nasi Jaha is part of protected traditional knowledge

Budi Argap Situngkir, Head of the North Maluku Regional Office of the Ministry of Law, stated that various traditional knowledge of the North Maluku community is legally protected. One example is Nasi Jaha, a sticky rice dish mixed with coconut milk cooked in bamboo.

Argap Situngkir explained that traditional knowledge is an intellectual work in the fields of science and technology that contains elements of traditional heritage characteristics produced, developed, and maintained by a particular community or society.

"Protection of communal intellectual property, including traditional knowledge, aims to prevent exploitation by outside parties, maintain cultural identity, and provide equitable economic benefits to the community as its owners," Argap Situngkir said in a statement on Monday (July 21, 2025).

He invited synergy between local governments, community groups, universities, and all parties to jointly record the potential of communal intellectual property such as traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, potential geographical indications, indications of origin, and others.

Nasi Jaha is a dish made from sticky rice and coconut milk that is part of Ternate cuisine in North Maluku.

A specialty of the Ternate region, Nasi Jaha is often found in traditional markets. It's also served at traditional ceremonies such as parties, ceremonies, dances, weddings, and other traditional celebrations.
