RE: El diario de mamá/ Mom's Diary

Reading Nathalia's diary touched Gertrudis deeply and reading your story touched me deeply!
How comes that you are dealing with a part of the sad German history and choose Germany as the setting of your story (which could be told anywhere where war has destroyed the deep inside of a person)? Do you have German roots in your family?

Sort:

I don't have German roots in my family. Right now, I have some Venezuelan friends living in Bonn. My friend married a German man and told me that her in-laws' house has a basement, and that they have the habit of buying non-perishable food because her grandparents, who lived through the war, were scarred by it. So, aware that Germany, fortunately, is not experiencing a time of war, it seemed very human to me that Getrudis offered shelter to a woman with two daughters who had been left homeless. Truly, there are many people who need kind gestures from us.

I researched common German names and surnames to write a credible account.

The context was Germany, because @weisser-rabe is from there, and I feel she is a kind human being, capable of helping anyone in need.
