When Songs Make Friends

About half an hour outside Narayanganj city,Bangladesh lies an ancient zamindar house. Nothing lives there now except a few stones statues, dirty stairs and a peaceful garden. Trees, strong bushes and bird sounds can be found around the house. People feel like they’re in a different and special world. Many people think the place is haunted, but Arohi considers it a calming area of heaven.

Arohi arrives here every afternoon. She carries a note pad, every now and then a harmonium and sometimes she just uses her voice and the tunes she knows to accompany herself. There’s a sweetness in her voice and the wind among the trees feels like they are joining her song. Music gives Arohi peace of mind. As a child, she wasn’t in a city therefore, every song she creates smells of village soil, has the melody of splashing pond water and captures the aroma from paddy fields.

At some point, her close friend Ruby arrived. Sohanur also appeared with the introduction of Ruby. Although he lives in the city, he really enjoys village music, the soil and history. He had a violin in his bag. From the very start, Arohi noticed that he wanted to share in making her music.

The group assembled under the banyan tree and sung the songs they’d learned. Arohi sang along, Sohanur played the violin and Ruby came up with the lyrics. Some kids were away from, playing nearby and a mother by the pond was gently rocking her child as a girl observed from the pond’s side. There was a soothing mood and gentle enchantment.

As soon as the song stopped, everyone was silent. Time seemed frozen. After that moment, their friendship was only starting. Arohi knew she would never forget that particular experience.
