Desde muy chico, Johan Julius Exner mostró interés por la pintura, razón por la cual se matriculó en el año 1839 en la Real Academia Danesa de Arte. Para ese entonces tenía 14 años.

Al principio deseaba realizar pinturas enmarcadas dentro del género histórico, pero luego de conocer al maestro Niels Lauritz Høyen se apasionó por las pinturas de género, que narraran historias cotidianas de los daneses; siendo Amager, una isla ubicada al sur de Copenhague, uno de sus lugares ideales para realizar sus obras.

Exner recibió una beca entre los años 1857 y 1858 que le permitió viajar a Italia, Suiza, Dresde, París y Viena.

El 15 de junio de 1863 contrajo nupcias con Inger Henriette Sophie Jensine Ringsted.

En el año 1864 se hizo miembro de la Academia de pintores de Dinamarca, así como de la Academia de Estocolmo, en el año 1866.

Ocupó el cargo de profesor de la Academia Danesa en el año 1876.

Recibió varios premios y cargos relacionados con el arte pictórico.

Falleció el 15 de noviembre del año 1910.

This outstanding plastic artist was born on November 30, 1825 in Copenhagen (Denmark). His father was the Czech musician Johann Gottlieb Exner, and his mother was Karen Jørgensdatter. Both arrived in Denmark during the Napoleonic era.

From a very young age, Johan Julius Exner showed an interest in painting, which is why he enrolled in the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1839. He was 14 years old at the time.

At first, he wanted to create paintings within the historical genre, but after meeting the master Niels Lauritz Høyen, he became passionate about genre paintings that told everyday stories of Danish people. Amager, an island located south of Copenhagen, was one of his ideal locations for his work.

Exner received a scholarship between 1857 and 1858 that allowed him to travel to Italy, Switzerland, Dresden, Paris, and Vienna.

On June 15, 1863, he married Inger Henriette Sophie Jensine Ringsted.

In 1864, he became a member of the Danish Academy of Painters, and in 1866, he joined the Stockholm Academy.

He became a professor at the Danish Academy in 1876.

He received several awards and held positions related to painting.

He died on November 15, 1910.
