Imagine erecting thousands of solar panels and one of the most challenging places on the planet, where the cold is extreme, snow covers everything and sunlight is scarce for part of the year, that was exactly what happened in Troms, a Norwegian city, within the Attic Polar Circle, where the largest vertical solar roof in the world is now installed.





6,400 solar panels were placed on top of the Tromsø terminal in the largest refrigeration center in the region. The project known as “Over Easy Solar” reached 320 kW peak capacity, surpassing the company's own previous record at the Norwegian National Football Stadium.





This is not only the largest solar system in the city, but also a model for the future of energy in cold and low-light regions. The secret is in the vertical installation, unlike the inclined panels that we see on traditional roofs, here they are placed standing, like rows of technological walls, this position allows two crucial advantages, the snow does not accumulate on them and the energy production is more efficient in the morning and evening hours, precisely when the demand is usually greater.





In addition, the space between the rows facilitates maintenance and takes advantage of roofs previously considered unviable for solar energy. Technically, the system has 1,600 vertical photovoltaic units connected to the facility's electrical grid, reducing costs and decreasing dependence on more expensive conventional energy.





Designed in collaboration with the company ENAC Toro and supported by regional partners, the set demonstrates that even in extreme environments it is possible to transform challenges and sustainable energy solutions.
