Capture a new state of matter

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine have just captured for the first time a state of matter that has never been measured before, a discovery that may pave the way for super-rugged electronics ideal for interplanetary missions and even self-recharging computers.

At the center of the innovation is an exotic material called Hafnium Pentatelluride HfTe5, which when subjected to magnetic fields of up to 70 Tesla, around 600 times stronger than a refrigerator magnet, reveals radical behavior. The material's ability to conduct electricity simply disappears, indicating that it enters a new phase, a fluid of exitons, particles that arise when their positive counterparts dance together in perfect quantum synchrony.

If it were possible to hold it in your hands, it would literally emit high-frequency light visible to the naked eye; The stability of the material under extreme radiation makes it ideal for contexts where traditional electronics fail. Instead of transporting electrical charge, as occurs in conventional circuits, this new state of matter can transport information through the spin of electrons.

This opens the door to safer quantum technologies, with lower energy consumption, less noise and greater durability, the perfect solution for extreme environments such as the surface of Mars or the orbit of Jupiter, the discovery is especially relevant now that the space race intensifies.

Companies like SpaceX are planning manned trips to Mars and NASA is already working on permanent exploration systems outside of Earth. One of the biggest challenges is the technology's resistance to high doses of cosmic radiation, and that is exactly where this new material can make a difference.

Computers and systems based on Hafnium Pentatelluride can last for years even in environments lethal to common electronics.
