Today, I am going to share with you about Kantaji Temple and the fair that takes place here. Without further delay, let’s begin.

The name of this temple is Kantaji or Kantajew Temple, which is located in Dinajpur district of North Bengal. This Kantaji Temple is one of the most ancient landmarks of Dinajpur.

This temple is located in Kaharole Upazila of Dinajpur. It is about 20 kilometers away from Dinajpur town and 8 kilometers away from Kaharole police station. I have many childhood memories connected with this temple, as it is located in my own upazila.

Kantaji Temple is basically a pilgrimage site for Hindus. Although the construction of the temple was initiated by Maharaja Pran Nath, it was later completed by his son Maharaja Ramnath. It is worth mentioning that this is a very ancient monument, and its construction was completed around 1752. Interestingly, even though this is a Hindu place of pilgrimage, the construction work was carried out by Muslim laborers.One of its most remarkable features is that the temple is beautifully decorated with terracotta.

Upon entering through the main gate, the temple stands in the middle. There is plenty of space around it for people to walk, along with verandas. Inside, there are facilities like tube wells for drinking water and bathrooms for visitors. However, no entry ticket system has been introduced yet to visit the temple. Certain rules and regulations are maintained, and there are administrative officials responsible for security. People from both home and abroad come to visit this temple.

At the beginning of winter, a fair is held at this temple. This fair is known as Rash Mela. People from far and wide gather here to enjoy it. The fair usually continues for about a month. All kinds of stalls are set up at the fair—food shops, household items, children’s toys, clothes for people of all ages, cosmetics, and many other things are available. From children to the elderly, everyone enjoys this one-month-long fair. I, along with my family, almost every year attend this fair. During this time, the fair becomes very crowded with visitors.
