A Glimpse into the Heart of the Market

This image helps to obtain a rather simple but dynamic setting of the freshness of daily life in the local market. I made this photo during a walk among the colorful stalls of which I saw immediately the sight of ripe tomatoes, which immediately attracted my attention. The vivid reds, the mellow oranges were a shining sight, their tomatoes were beautifully rounded, fresh to be included in another meal of someone.

Such markets make me think of how food is a part of our community. The tomatoes on our shelves have a farmer behind them, who toiled all day in the sun, and a trader, who makes sure that our tables are stocked with fresh food on a daily basis. It is not just about selling and buying but it is a sequence of hard work, survival and day-to-day hustle.

I was watching the seller picking tomatoes and loading good deals into the bowls and packing the nylon bags with peppers. The air was also laden with spicy pepper, fresh vegetable and people conversing and negotiating. It is a beat song, a song, which represents the beat of the majority of towns and cities in Nigeria.

It is the truth that renders this scene authentic and real and beautiful. No filter, no staging-
a simple crass peep at the destination of our food. They are not merely places of exchange, but also of interaction, and since the aroma of fresh food blends with the conversation, grinned faces, and struggles.

Whenever I visit the market I cannot forget that there is not only color in each of these photographs but it is the soul of life, life in its everyday living, its struggle, its hard work and its unity. This is a picture of such naked reality: that is the beauty that can be found in the ordinary things that we often disregard.
