Wali Nanggroe Discusses Aceh Cultural Preservation and Special Status

The Wali of Nanggroe Aceh met the daughter of Sultan Hamengkubuwono in Yogya.

Wali Nanggroe Aceh, His Majesty Tgk. Malik Mahmud Al Haythar, made a working visit to the Yogyakarta Palace, Indonesia, to strengthen cultural relations and discuss efforts to preserve Acehnese traditions that are increasingly being eroded by time, Friday, June 27, 2025.

The arrival of Wali Nanggroe was warmly welcomed by the Eldest Daughter of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono, Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Mangkubumi, at the Yogyakarta Palace. During the visit, Wali Nanggroe was accompanied by Special Staff Dr. Muhammad Raviq and Katibul Wali Abdullah Hasbullah and Head of General Affairs, Cut Aja Muzita and other staff.

Head of Cooperation and Public Relations of Wali Nanggroe, Zulfikar Idris, said that the meeting was the fourth meeting that specifically discussed the history and culture of Aceh between the two parties.

“Culture is the only thing we have and should be proud of. Acehnese culture is hundreds of years old and should not be lost just because of negative external influences,” said Wali Nanggroe.

In the conversation, Wali Nanggroe emphasized that the Acehnese government and customary law system in the past was once an example, but is now declining due to various challenges of the times.

He expressed concern about external influences that are slowly eroding Acehnese cultural values, as well as the importance of efforts to revive customs as the identity of the Acehnese people.

“Yogyakarta is an example for all of us, how they are still able to maintain their sultanate and culture amidst the development of the times,” he added.

On that occasion, Wali Nanggroe expressed his gratitude to the Palace for the welcome given, and hoped that this visit could be a space for mutual learning and mutual support in maintaining Aceh's special status.[]
