You are of course right about your experiences and your recommendations – but I think that has less to do with growing up than with the way in which it happens. My children had some responsibilities from an early age and were aware of them. They slowly and independently slipped into their adult roles. That's not to say they didn't have their struggles, but they weren't taken by surprise by the realities of adulthood...
