Yes, that is in fact a straw roof. They were quite common in Denmark till the 1920s-30s, particularly in rural areas. They offer great insulation in cold climates, but the drawback is that they only last about 30 years or so, and it's a lot of work, and very expensive to replace them. They are not as common these days, but there are still quite a few of them, mostly on older historic landmark type buildings and farms.

And yes, you shouldn't run the BBQ too close to the house!

The fire insurance — IF anyone will give it to you — is pretty insane. Really, the main issue making these rarer and rarer is the replacement cost. You can figure a new roof for a modest sized single family home will set you back $40,000+. But it does definitely look great!
