Animal Activities #29
Shadow under the mango tree
INTRODUCTION |
---|
Shadow a quiet, cautious and watchful cat lived under a big mango tree in madam Ekaette's compound. He was just a hasty kitten hiding behind the pots in madam Ekaette's compound.
He was born with the name "Shadow". Due to the fact that he would walk as gently as, even at night, that no one would even hear a single step of his, made the children in the compound to call him Shadow.
The mango leaves in madam Ekaette's compound kept Shadow cool at noon, and twisted roots made perfect hiding for Shadow from Madam Ekaette's dog "Bruno" when he came bounding around.
Unlike other cats that roamed the street, Shadow was exceptional. He would rarely go beyond the compound fence.
Everyday, Shadow would wake up and wait for madam Ekaette by the kitchen door. And she loved Shadow so much that she won't fail to toss a piece of fish skin on a flat stone. Shadow will move gently to the fish and eat it while keeping one wary eye at Bruno.
Shadow continued in this Routine every day. Wake up in the day, wait for madam Ekaette at the kitchen door, knowing fully well that he's going to eat, chase a stray lizard at noon, and wait for madam Ekaette in the evening. Life was going very well with this poor kitten who had not known anyone.
One day, Shadow's Routine was broken, Madam Ekaette didn't come out of the house as usual. Instead it was a young lady dressed in shining clothes. Shadow walked toward her gently and she shooed him.
Shadow retreated to the mango tree, hungrily. His stomach growled, he looked at the stone by the door to Madam Ekaette's kitchen, but it was empty.
By nightfall, he couldn't control the hunger that he had to break his code by squeezing through the hole in the wall to hunt for food. The world outside was strange to him, noisier and dangerous. Shadow kept on going stopping when footsteps approached close. Luckily for him, he found a few bones. He ate quickly without hesitating. This was no safe place for Shadow.
Days passed, and madam Ekaette was not coming to the kitchen rather it was the younger woman. Bruno spent more time tied up. The compound seemed colder and the mango tree offered less comfort.
The young lady started dropping some remains of food for Shadow yet wasn't as friendly as madam Ekaette. Shadow, on his part, remained under the mango tree.

Life has changed for Shadow. And though Madam Ekaette was gone, Shadow would sometimes sit by the kitchen door, waiting for a familiar voice to call him "Shadow, my friend".

His relationship with Madam Ekaette feels tender and loving, while his interactions with Bruno add a little bit of entertaining tension. I love how the environment—like the mango tree, the pots, and the flat rocks—become part of Shadow's life, bringing the story to life. Thank you
