A farmer may clear a piece of land and cultivate only cassava. If any other plant grows along with the cassava, then the plant becomes a weed. A plant called a weed when it begins to grow in a farmland where it is not cultivated by the farmer.

The farmer who wants to obtain a good yield of cultivated crops should have some primary knowledge about weeds. It could be surprising why a plant that is not cultivated in a farmland begins to grow in the farmland. This does not happen just like that but some factors must have contributed for it to happen, such as

Man and Animals: Some weeds seeds can cling to a farmer or farm visitor's shoes or clothes which can end up in an unwanted sites in the farmland. Also, some animals' body could be sticky, covered with wool or feathers, which might carry seeds that may fall off into the farmlands and grow as weed.

Wind: Lighter seeds like elephant grass can be carried by winds to an unwanted farm sites and grow there.

Water: Running waters carry plenty of seeds along. That are deposited in the farmland, they germinate and grow there.

Moreso, these weeds are easily dispersed, produce large numbers of seeds, they are capable of surviving on their own and growing faster competing with cultivated crops.

Some of these weeds could be useful in making herbal medicines for curing diseases, They can also be a source of manure when they are decomposed
Weeds could grow beautiful leaves that can be used for decorations, and they act as cover crop which helps prevent erosion.

Allowing weeds to grow in the farmland, considering their benefit, could sometimes be dangerous because it lead to poor yield in the farm as they will be competing with cultivated crops.

Control Measures

  • By Burning them
  • Hand pulling/uprooting them with the hands
  • Weeding
  • Crop rotation: Some weeds are associated with some crops, and by crop rotation, you interrupt their life cycle
  • Mulching: weed germination and growth could be interrupted by covering the surface of the farmland from sunlight with materials like nylon
  • Tillage: when farm tools are used in the farmland to cultivate the soil, weeds are cut and uprooted.

In conclusion, weeds should be controlled at an early stage to enable crops to get all the nutrients they need to grow well

Well done @chilaw. I have learnt something today concerning these unwanted plants. The frequent practice that I have observed recently is the use of chemicals to control weeds. Is it truly ideal for chemicals to be used to control weeds growing alongside with planted crops?
