Animals needs to be fed sufficient quantities of balanced diets in order to grow well and produce the products derived from them like meat, milk and eggs.
The food given to farm animals is referred to as livestock feed. Its a mixture of certain ingredients which consist of all the nutrients reqiured by a farm animal. The portion of feed given to an animal each day to meet its nutritional requirments is known as daily ration.
However, feeds given to farm animals varies depending on the type of animals. Monogastric animals like chicken can only digest energy or protein rich concentrated foods, whereas ruminants and herbivorous animals such as goats feed mainly on plants since their stomach can digest bulky and highly fibrous feed materials.
Types of Farm Animal Feed
- Proteinous Feeds These feeds are high in protein which are needed by all farm animals for body building. These feeds are made up of amino acids, they can be from plant such as cotton seed, cashew nut, groundnut, and soybean or it can be from animal origin which includes meat, blood meal or fish.

Forages these are animal feeds from grasses or legumes. They can be harvested and fed to stock or they can be grazed directly by the animals at pastures
Vitamin yielding Feeds These are feeds that are essential for the proper and normal functioning of the animals body, their deficiency can lead to ill- health. Examples of feed rich in vitamins are yellow maize, fruits, fish meal, legumes, and grasses.
Energy FeedsThese are feeds rich in energy and easily degisted by farm animals. Examples Root tubers like cassava, yam, Potatoes. Cereal grains are another source of energy feeds such as millet, wheat, guinea corn, hay and maize. Fat and oil can also increase the energy density of farm animal feed and this can be sources from sun flower seed, and groundnut.
Moreso, Farm animals needs some feeding tools or materials to supply feeds and water to them. These feeding tools includes:-

- Spade and Shovels; for mixing the feeds and other ingredients together.
- Buckets; for fetching water and packing feed
- Bowl; for packing feeds before transferring to the the right containers
- Hay Racks; for feeding animals forages
- Feeders; conteainers where animal feeds and placed.
- Water drinkers; Use for giving farm animals water.
Farm animals requires basic substance which is feed to help them resist attacks of diseases, get the right amounts of essential nutrients, grow well and reproduce.
