One of the oldest and the most fundamental practices in human history is Agriculture that has been the foundation of civilization and economy. Since the beginning of time, humans have been dependent on agriculture as a source of food, clothes and shelter. It has continued to be the primary means of livelihood to millions of families all over the world especially in rural setups. In addition to the fact that agriculture is a source of sustenance, it is also a major contributor to the development of nations and international stability.

One of the largest contribution of agriculture is food security. Without an effective and sustainable agricultural system, societies would perish in hunger, malnutrition and instability. Livestock and crops provide fisheries, which are the sources of nutrients that ensure a human being leads a productive life. The industries are also dependent on agriculture since they obtain raw materials such as cotton, timber and oilseeds that are transformed to all time products which we use in our everyday lives.

Other than food and industry, agriculture creates employment. Agricultural value chain offers millions of employment opportunities in all parts of the world, which include farmers and herders, processors, exporters, etc. This has seen it become a very significant poverty alleviating tool particularly in the developing nations. The modern technologies of mechanization, irrigation and biotechnology can be applied in agriculture to increase production, productivity and reduce losses following harvesting.

Sustainable agriculture is also significant in fighting climatic changes and environmental conservation. The crop rotation, organic and agro forestry, aid in saving the soil fertility, biodiversity as well as decreasing the destructive emissions. The sustainable practices will also provide the future generations with a productive and fertile land that will support them.

Furthermore, farming leads to cultural harmony and integration. In most societies farming practices, festivals and traditions cannot be separated to agricultural cycles as it has been essential in creating values and heritage of such individuals.

To sum it up, agriculture is not an occupation, but it is a blood, a lifeblood of the economies, the surrounding environment is cultivated, and the mankind is fed. One can even say that the modern world may be mostly prosperous and stable due to modern innovation and maintenance of the traditional wisdom in the context of agriculture.
