Yam pottage
Good everyone!
It is my day 4 post on the week's contest, which is about agricultural food.
I would be giving my little knowledge about my choice of food this day which is yam pottage.
Its name has given it away and of course, it is a simple dish made from yam along with other vegetables and ingredients. It is a Nigerian local dish, prepared and eaten mostly in the southern and I western region of Nigeria.
Through this post, I would be noting a few things about it which includes the recipe, image and nutritional facts.
To prepare yam pottage,
Ingredients include:
yam
Peppers (ball and chilli pepper)
Onions
Palm oil
Salt
Crayfish
Seasonings.
Utensils include:
Cooking pot
Bowls
Masher
Blender
Big spoon
Recipe:
- Get your yam tubers, slice and peel them into a clean water contained in a bowl.
- Rinse the slices carefully and thoroughly from the bowl into a cooking pot.
- Add water to the yams and place on your burner to boil.
- Add a bit of salt and sugar (optional)
- While the yam gently boils, get your peppers and onions; blend them all together. Then pour it into the boiling yam.
- After boiling for three minutes, add your oil, cray fish and any leafy vegetables you've got.
- Add your seasonings.
- Add salt again, making sure the yam broth is not too salty. But tasty.
- Let it boil again till the yam is done enough to be eaten.
- When this happens, put off the burner and get your masher. Gently press down the yam slices into a mash or pottage. (It's not necessary to have all slices mashed.
At the end of your preparation, you should have something like this 👇
