Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #51
Hello steemians, I am participating in this week's contest which focuses on the term deforestation, I will be sharing my point of view about deforestation, it disadvantages and the reason for the enforcement of Reforestation.
What Do you understand by Deforestation |
---|
Firstly, I will like to start with it's meaning or definition.
Deforestation is the felling down of trees for wood and other timber products it can also be seen as the permanent removal and destruction of forests to convert the land for man uses, such as agriculture, urbanization or mining. Deforestation can be caused by both artificial and natural causes the artificial or man made cause may be due to the use of the land for purposes such as agriculture (especially for commercial crops like palm oil and livestock grazing), logging, mining, and urbanization. These activities convert forests into farms, pastures, and infrastructure for a growing global population. Natural causes include wildfires, droughts, and diseases, though human practices often exceeds these natural causes.
What are the Dangers to Deforestation |
---|
The dangers or side effects of deforestation can be seen as;
Climate change: Deforestation releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming. Be cause forests absorbs carbon dioxide. But when they are cut down the carbon is then released back to the atmosphere.
Soil erosion: Deforestation exposes the soil to wind and water washing away the top soil leading to loss of fertility, desertification, and an increased risk of landslides.
Bio diversity loss: Deforestation destroys habitats, which can lead to the extinction of plant and animal species that are unable to adapt to other habit.Deforestation also leads to the loss of biodiversity, threatening countless species that call these forests home and disrupting ecosystems .
Floods and droughts increase: Deforestation increases floods and droughts because there are no trees to control the amount of water passing and leaving the ground and exposes the soil to high temperature which leads to dehydration of the soil and then drought follows.
OTHER EFFECTS OF DEFORESTATION MAY INCLUDE
Rising in sea level.
Loss of soil fertility.
Food scarcity.
Wildlife extinction.
Water pollution.
Habitat loss.
Disruption of water cycle.
Forest fire.
How can deforestation be Reduced |
---|
Deforestation can be reduced through some measure, There are many ways of preventing deforestation, but here are some few examples.
Government should imply policies which includes strong command-and-control measures with strict monitoring and penalties, incentive-based programs like payments for ecosystem services, and legal protections such as protected areas and clarified land tenure.
Afforestation: It is the establishing of new forest on lands that were not forest before.Afforestation involves the process of planting trees on land that has not been forested for a very long time. It is a natural climate solution that helps combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, but also provides benefits like reducing soil erosion, improving soil quality, and creating habitats for wildlife and it is also an effective way be cause it improves carbon sequestration and improve soil nutrients.
Reforestation: Reforestation is the replanting of trees in an area where a forest is previous cut down or destroyed by fire disease or logging.
minimize paper consumption: Means using less paper by recycling the paper and printing more efficiently it also introduce the alternative of using digital devices in writing.
Recycling of waste papes: Papers can be recycled to produce new products such as news papers, magazines, card boxes ,paper towels greeting cards and egg cartons to minimize the cutting down of trees and paper wastage.
