Animal Activities #40
A cat entitled Si Belang (the name of a tiger in Malay). Si Belang was striped black and white, and his green eyes glistened in the sun. He wasn’t a pet, but everyone in the village was familiar with him as a friendly and helpful person.
Si Belang on the other hand would stroll along the rice paddy dikes every morning in search of little fishes or farmer's scraps. Its wing is tightly wrapped so it can't fly.
Si Belang, albeit a hunter, was sympathetic. "I'm just hungry, not cruel," Belang said with a slight smile. When he was finished, he began walking slowly away from the little bird.
The little bird said his name was Pipit and every morning he would come to Si Belang to say hello, and bring him bread crumbs from people’s homes, which he snatched a few at a time. And in exchange Si Belang would keep Pipit safe from harm, snakes in particular and other stray cats- who were frequent prowlers.
The monsoon came down. Winds and lightning rattled the village. One night a storm blew Pipit's nest away. He slipped and was drenched.
Si Belang tapped him gently with his teeth and without further ado, he lifted him up and took him to the old stable where he slept. He made Pipit warm with his body through the night until the tiny bird was well again.
And from the day on they were inseparable the two. Pipit belted out songs to Belang each morning while Belang stood guard over Pipit's nest to shield it from harm.
The villagers, seeing this odd companionship between the two, would smile. And from them, they discovered that loves can grow anywhere—even between two very different beings.
