Hungary isn't western Europe and for sure (also back then) the east European countries are way safer than the Western ones.

I know, I know...but unfortunately my mother didn't know. She took the Western as safer (that's why no issue to send me to England, France, Spain, Austria, etc., but I couldn't mention an Eastern country...), well, in any way, Austria is the safest Western country where I travelled.
Austria must have changed a lot. I can't say I ever felt safe. Till today they are hostile to foreigners, their neigbours, Europeans, Dutch included. I cannot remember one single time they didn't stand with guns, the border was open during all those years of that one great EU. ☹️
If I can avoid it I will not stay overnight in a hotel up there.
From experiences, and not ours only, the hotels are also one of the worst if it comes to how they treat their employees so no way I want my children work there.
Being pushed of the road or followed and tried to be pushed of a mountain by a truck is also something we only experienced in Austria.

That's incredible, dear friend! My last trip to Austria was above 25 years ago and it was my third time there. I always have found kindness, good welcome and cleanness. Into my best trips. Upset how it changed...in any way, some years ago an in-law of my husband married a man from Austria and went to live there. She is a nurse. She says it's very better than Latin America (well, obviously it's to believe whatever central and northern European area is very better than most of Latin America: we are still third world).
