And one important thing I’ve learned as an artist is to always give the painting some time. While painting, sometimes it’s good to step away, take a break, and then come back with fresh eyes. Even after finishing, if you leave it for a while and look again later, you’ll often see it differently each time. It’s like music — sometimes we hear a song for the first time and don’t like it, but later in another moment or mood we fall in love with it. So don’t be afraid, and don’t be upset if the result doesn’t feel perfect right away. We can always try again and again, and sometimes the painting we think is “bad” can actually be the one that helps us discover our true style and artistic voice.
