Introduction

Education at all levels is very important and should not be neglected. As important as that could be, it's very pertinent that a lot of attention should be given to it because, as its name, it is the very root on which other levels of education depend. That is to say that without basic education, it will be difficult for any individual to scale through successfully.

What do you understand by basic education?

When asked about my understanding of basic education, I'll simply state that basic education is the very first level of education anyone should receive before attending other levels of education or learning. Basic education is the foundation that builds an individual up for higher school learning. Whatever is learnt in basic education is to enhance an individual to be able to meet up with what would be expected of the individual in the higher school of learning or future endeavours.

The important thing about basic education is that it can be in a formal school setting or informal. In Nigeria, every child is expected to receive this basic education before the age of 15, and it is under the Universal Basic Education (UBE). This is split into 6 years in primary school and 3 years in junior secondary school.

According to you, what things should have been included in the basic education? Explain!
  1. Writing skills: Everyone who has passed through the basic education should be able to hold a pen to write at least names and other common words.

  2. Reading skills: Basic Education should provide people with the ability to read. Everyone who has passed through this level of education should at least be able to read in a simple language depending on the language used in that country or state.

  3. Counting skills: People who have this level of education should be able to count numbers and also calculate simple figures. It may not be serious mathematics, but he/she be able to count numbers and also count money used as a medium of exchange.

  4. Moral values: Basic education should include the teaching of moral values. That is building good character and knowledge of the acceptable norms that should be practised and the unacceptable things that shouldn't be practised in society.

  5. Personal cleanliness: This is how to take care of oneself.

  6. Inter-personal and problem solving skills.

  7. Developmental skills should be included in basic education.

Additionally, basic education should include the understanding of general knowledge of our society or the environment where we live. It will be bad that, at a certain age, one does not have a pre-idea about common things around the society that they live in.

Do you believe basic education plays a vital role in our growth? Explain how?

Yes, I believe basic education plays a very important role in our growth as individuals. Like I've mentioned above, basic education is the foundation that is used to build up our higher education.

  • Basic Education gives the foundation to self-awareness and development. For example, it enhances entrepreneurial skills.

  • It reduces social vices and crimes in society because an individual who has passed through basic education will be taught the dos and don'ts of society.

  • It helps individuals to know their rights and duties as a citizen of a country.

  • It helps individuals to make meaningful contributions to their society.

  • It builds self-confidence because anyone who is educated has a higher level of confidence than a person who is not educated.

Basic Education is a rock that builds our behaviors as we grow and it lays the foundation for our future.
