Cybercrime

A thief is someone who takes what is not theirs, and depending on where and how the act of stealing is done, a name is given to it. A thief will typically commit the theft when the owner is not around or not paying attention. Robbery requires the owner's presence, and the victim is forced to comply. To enforce compliance, the robber may use a weapon, making it armed robbery. If this occurs on the high seas with boats or ships, it's piracy. Blocking travellers on the road makes one a highwayman. If the act is facilitated with a pen, by someone in a position of trust and misappropriates funds, it's embezzlement. And if the vile act is committed with the help of a computer, the internet, or other ICT devices, then that makes it a cybercrime. And I just love how the English language has many words for similar concepts with subtle differences.

◉ Does advanced technology open the door to advanced crimes?

Technological advancements are like moving from a hand tool to a power tool and can be used for any purpose. While it can ease the accomplishment of positive endeavours, it can also be used to achieve goals that are not noble. So, yes, if people today are more inclined to doing vile things, they can seek the help of today's advanced technology in achieving their goals.
With powerful hardware backed by sophisticated software powered by artificial intelligence, there are countless new opportunities for cybercrimes, hacking, identity theft and online scams.
It becomes easier to effectively launch a denial of service attack or a Data breach.
With the help of AI, digital piracy, AI-powered phishing or social engineering and Cryptocurrency-related crimes are becoming sophisticated.

◉ Having an antidote before launching any technology

I believe law enforcement agents should exhibit the same creativity, drive, devotion and passion found among these criminals. We really need to have an antidote before launching a new technology to the public. Considering potential risk and abuse in advance, establishing regulatory frameworks and safety protocols. Going as far as having contingency plans will help protect new technologies from abuse.
Having these measures in place can help minimise or eliminate any potential negative consequences.

◉ Share some tips through which we can alert old family members and society's view of cybercrime

To Alert Old Family Members on the dangers of cybercrime, I would start with the basics, explain what cybercrime is, as I explained in the opening paragraphs and how they can be affected.
Older People love stories, so I would share stories that illustrate the risks of cybercrime, such as online scams or identity theft.

I will now talk about strong passwords, password storage and the possibility of getting such a strong password through phishing technologies. And how this one's could identify and avoid suspicious emails or links.

When it comes to changing society's view, I feel we could organise community events, and during the events, we use simple language and avoid high-sounding technical jargon to ensure everyone can understand the information put across in the workshops, seminars, or webinars, raising awareness and highlighting the financial, emotional, and social consequences of cybercrime..

Conclusion and Invitation

Knowledge is the power we need to fight a decisive war against cyber vices. Providing accurate information and action plans to help relatives be informed and alert.

I am inviting @dequeen, @okere-blessing and @eliany to have a say in this topic.
