Existen dos tipos de educación: la informal y la formal. La primera es la que se recibe en el hogar, y en contacto con el entorno que nos rodea. Esta educación es la que permite a los niños adquirir las ideologías, costumbres, hábitos y valores éticos y morales, desde los primeros años de vida. De allí que muchos teóricos señalen que la educación para la vida es la que se imparte en el hogar, y que la educación primaria se ha de enfocar en enseñar lo relacionado con los conocimientos académicos.
Porque en el hogar los aprendizajes se sustentan en la creencia y en las tradiciones familiares, no siempre lógicas; mientras que en la educación formal, los aprendizajes se basan en la ciencia; y en este sentido, nos ayuda a distinguir "lo bueno de lo malo"; "lo correcto de lo incorrecto", pero desde una perspectiva confiable o verídica.
