The festival of Dussehra is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Rama over Ravana. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil. On Dussehra, people make an effigy of Ravana from paper and wood. They place firecrackers inside it. In the evening, they burn Ravana and distribute prasad. This burning of Ravana is performed every year. It reminds us that when the pot of evil and atrocities reaches its limit, God sends someone to end it, and the end is very bad.

Let me tell you about Ravana: why did Rama kill him? Ravana was the king of Lanka, a very learned man and a great devotee of Lord Shiva. But once he came to the forest for hunting. Upon seeing Rama's wife, Mother Sita, he was captivated by her beauty. In his desire to possess her, he abducted her and took her to his hometown, Lanka.

Ravana made many efforts to make Mother Sita his wife. But Mother Sita remained undeterred and warned him clearly. Meanwhile, Rama attacked Lanka with his monkey army and burned down Ravana's entire city, including his own.

Thus, Ravana was destroyed, thus ending anyone who cast an evil eye on someone's wife. Rama brought Sita back safely to his city with full respect and honor.

That is why the festival of Dussehra is celebrated.
