Steemit Learning Challenge-S27W1; Physiofit; Pain-free Challenge
Hello, everyone; we are here to share the Challenge for week 1, the first week of the Steemit Learning Challenge season 27. I am grateful to all the users who participated in the previous season and supported my previous course, and thankful to the Steemit team for this opportunity again. I invite all the users to share their unique participation and try to gain good grades to get selected as the winner of the Steemit Learning Challenge season 27, week 1.
Pain
Pain is an unpleasant sensation, either localized or generalized, that leads to discomfort and occurs due to tissue damage or intense stimulus. There are many types of pain, but here we are focusing on the 2 main types: acute and chronic pain. As we are discussing pain in a generalized way, we can't describe all types, pathologies and diseases.
Types
Here we are discussing 2 main types of pain. Acute pain and chronic pain occur in response to injury or illness.
Acute Pain
Acute pain is the sharp, intense and severe type of pain that is caused by injury, or tissue damage by sudden trauma, infection or accident. Its duration is short and lasts for days or a few weeks. Acute pain is the warning signal to the body so that the body initiates the protective mechanism against injury.
Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is the pain that lasts longer for months or years, and it takes a longer time to heal than acute pain. Sometimes it occurs if acute pain or any injury is left untreated for a prolonged duration. The common causes of chronic pain are arthritis, nerve damage, untreated illness, and degenerative changes in either the spine or the joints of the whole body.
Pathology
Acute pain pathology is like when someone gets injured or suffers from an illness. The first protective mechanism of our body is to produce inflammation around the wound. For example, the most common injury a person gets is being hit by an object, either on the elbow or the knee. If there is a close wound (skin remains intact), the first thing will be redness and then after 1 or 2 days, cyanosis of the skin.
This happened because our body's pain receptors send signals to the brain and spinal cord, and then the brain releases neurotransmitters that transmit pain signals. Inflammation or swelling around the wound enhances the pain signal, and then we have to work on the pain receptors and inflammation that will reduce the pain automatically.
In chronic pain, the brain and spinal cord continuously receive signals of pain through pain receptors that lead to central sensitization that excites the neurons in the spinal cord, then it leads to peripheral sensitization, which means the pain receptors become more sensitive and enhance the pain signals. After that, acute inflammation turned into chronic inflammation in the nervous system, and pain became persistent in nature.
To reduce chronic pain, we have to work more and focus more on neuroplasticity than external healing. In neuroplasticity, we have to relearn and assist the patient to regain normal brain and spinal cord functioning.
Physical Therapy Intervention for Pain
Hot & Cold Pack
The most important thing that we have to keep in mind while treating a patient on the day of injury is that we can follow the protocol according to pain type. Till now, we have been using a cold pack for acute injury or pain and a hot pack for chronic pain or illness. But in some cases, we have to reverse the protocol.
For example, if we have a patient with a closed wound and a bruise on any part of the body, we would take the history from the patient. If the patient says the injury occurred 2 or 3 days ago, then first we have to apply cold pain on the injured area to minimise or subside the pain. And if there is a patient with low back pain and pain has been present for 6 months or more, then we have to apply a hot pack according to the pain type, as it's chronic pain that is persistent and prolonged.
In some cases, we have to change the strategy by assessing the patient, like I have a patient with chronic pain but he/she also have a swelling around the injured part or pain in a specific area, so in that case first we have to subdue the swelling because sometimes pain is only due to muscle tightness that has been covered by swelling. So, if we reduce the swelling by 50 to 60% pain subsides, and then we have to work on the remaining issue by using a hot pack and exercises.
The duration of application, whether it's a cold pack or a hot pack, should be a minimum of 10 minutes. You can change the direction of the cold pack, and with precaution, as we can't apply a cold or hot pack directly on naked skin, it would be better to keep a cloth before applying it.
Stretches
There are a few stretches that everyone can perform if they suffer from pain in that region, whether it's acute or chronic. Neck stretches are the best to relieve neck tension as they elongate the shortened or stressed muscles also improve neck joint mobility.
Cervical Stretches for Neck Pain
Knee to chest exercise is the best exercise to unlock your facet joints also improve mobility in lumbar region. Best exercise if you persistent low back pain and increase lumbar region curve.
Low Back Pain (if you have lordosis or increase lumbar curve)
If you feel continuous tightness in your hamstrings and calf muscles then these stretches will relieve the tension and tightness of muscles and improve your range of motion as well.
Hamstring and Calf Stretch
- Task 1: First you have to share your knowledge about pain, it's type and pathology.
- Task 2: You have to find a patient with the symptom and share history of injury or illness. You can also share your history too if your suffer from any injury recently or previously that hasn't treated yet.
- Task 3: It would be better if you treat the patient pain by performing or apply above given exercises or tips, share videos or pictures while performing and then review after getting treatment.
