Balance

Balance is the ability of our body to maintain posture and stability in different conditions or positions, whether it is static balance or dynamic balance. These are the 2 types of balance that we maintain in different postures all day.

  • Static Balance, it's the type of balance when we are standing still or not moving.
  • Dynamic balance is the type of balance that we maintain while moving around.

Coordination

Coordination is the ability to assemble or unite different body parts or multiple body parts to perform difficult movements proficiently. There are 3 main components of coordination, motor control, time and rhythm. Motor control refers to the ability of the body to control movements and maintain posture while moving or staying still. Time refers to coordinating the movements with accuracy. Rhythm is to perform movements in a rhythmic pattern.

Balance and coordination are the 2 main components that we need to work on if any patient is suffering from a risk of falls or falls frequently. Because these are the 2 components that we need in our daily activities, for example, walking, running, stair climbing and maintaining posture while moving.

Pathophysiology

In balance and coordination, various systems of the body are involved, such as the vestibular system, proprioception, visual and the central nervous system. The vestibular system is the system that detects the changes in the position of the head; it is located in the inner ear. Proprioception is the sense of the position of the body, and the sensors are present in muscles, tendons and joints.

In the visual system, our eyes are the organ that provides input, which helps in balance and coordination maintenance. The central nervous system, in which the brain processes the response, and then the above system helps to maintain balance and coordination.

In a patient with balance and coordination impairment, the underlying mechanism is first, which causes the impairment of sensory integration. In balance and coordination, impaired patients have difficulty combining or uniting information or responses from all the systems, like vestibular, proprioceptive and visual systems.

There is also impaired motor control because of muscle weakness and spasticity that affect the balance and coordination. In such patients, there are cognitive disabilities, such as patients suffering from memory issues or a lack of attention, which affect their balance and coordination.

Physical Therapy Intervention for Pain

The most common and effective treatment protocol used in physiotherapy for impaired balance and coordination is hurdles in walking, and squats. Single-leg squats, balancing on a ball, walking with hurdles. In this challenge, I will share 3 exercises that are easy to perform by any individual that have less balance and coordination.

Side Walking

In side walking, patients try to work on the visual system, vestibular system and central nervous system to activate and help in balance maintenance while side walking without any issue.

Side walking is a type of walk, but it's a bit difficult for a patient with balance and coordination impairment. Because side walking is working on multiple systems and help in walking without any imbalance or incoordination.

Back or Reverse Walk

Back walk or reverse Walk is the most difficult for a patient who suffer from any neuroglical issue or anything else. But to make it difficult for them and to improve balance and coordination it's necessary to add back walk in the exercise program.

We perform balk walk in patient especially in stroke patients to improve balance, coordination and gait. But at least you have to fully supervise while exercising then allow patient to walk independently without any assistance.

Single Leg Squats

Single Leg squats is the best exercise for sports players because they didn't get enough time to regain everything and then they have to start the game again. So, for them single leg squats is the best exercise.

Challenge
  • Task 1: You have to share your knowledge about balance, it's type, coordination and pathophysiology.
  • Task 2: You have to share a cause that lead to balance and coordination impairment. You can also share your history too if your suffer from any injury recently that is present with symptom of impairment of balance and coordination.
  • Task 3: It would be better if you treat the patient by performing above given physiotherapy management, share videos or pictures while performing and then review after getting treatment. (Try to use 2 methods).
