The world is being destroyed by a deadly virus with minimal hope of survival. Anyway, United States Ship Nathan James, Captain Tom Chandler, and his crew are fighting unconditionally to protect it and save the humanity against all the odds.

The Last Ship is one of the greatest and popular TV shows of all time. Throughout 5 seasons, we see the pride and integrity of the US Navy, the mature leadership of Captain Chandler, the sacrifices and bravery of his crew, battles, and it was filled with curiosity.

It was created by Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane. They used the novel "The Last Ship" written by William Brinkley in 1988 for the production. It's not just about surviving against the virus, but also resisting against political dramas, international tensions, and a few other global pandemics as well.

The show has received 7.4/10 from 67K ratings on IMDB. As you can see in the image below, most episodes have received 7.5+ reviews, especially in the first three seasons. Well, come on, this may not be perfect, and totally realistic movie, but the storyline, the actions, curiosity, and Naval battles will wow you. As I could find, they have used actual navy battle ships, and that setting is simply awesome.

Season 01

Well, when the US Ship Nathan James was out in the sea, the world was attacked by a deadly virus. So, when a considerable amount of the population was dying, their entire mission was to find a cure under the supervision of Dr. Rachel Scott.

So, throughout 10 episodes, we can see the challenges they faced in reaching a positive outcome. With the limited supplies, they had to regularly refill fuel and other essential items. The ship was attacked by the Russian military to capture Dr. Scott and the primary sample of the virus. And also, they had to refrain from any contact with the infected people, and provide necessary facilities for Dr. to proceed and test her results. The distress among the crew has to be managed effectively as well.

Anyway, they did find a cure after all, and Nathan James arrives in Baltimore with the cure, hoping for mass production and to restore the nation. But the proceedings in the country were not what they expected.

Season 02

Amy Granderson was leading the country, and she was operating something odd. She was trying to protect the selected and privileged ones while killing the diseased ones. She took the control of the ship and was trying to destroy the cure and everything with that. Anyhow, Captain Chandler and the crew managed to defeat her in the first half, and once again, on sailing for their purpose of mass production, and spreading the cure.

Along the way, they had to face another enemy, a nuclear-powered submarine led by Sean Ramsey of the British navy. And on the other hand, he is making a cult with the immune people taking the control of the country. Meanwhile, Dr. Scott was trying new methods of spreading the cure via powder, eventually through normal contact.

So, they have to face the attacks of Submarine as well, to defeat the army of immunes and restore the balance of the country.

Season 03

The USA was getting on its feet, while Chandler worked as the new Chief of Naval Operations and Slattery as the new captain of the Nathan James.

Chandler went to China to mediate with President Peng, to distribute the cure in Asia, while the ship was in Northeast Asia. Chandler was nearly assassinated by the Chinese government, while Slattery and a few members were kidnapped by a Japanese pirate team led by Takehaya. It turned out that China had deliberately mutated the cure to erase Japan from the world.

So, we can see a very tense political battle in Asia, and also, on the other hand, there is a huge coup within the country by the local leaders. So, how did Chandler and the crew cope with this all? It's the best season for me.

Season 04

After a few months, the world was suffering from another virus, Red Rust, but this time it was killing all the crops and food. There was one seed that hadn't been affected and had become the only hope for survival. But several parties are after it, other than Nathan James.

Meanwhile, Chandler has retired and is living as a fisherman in Greece with his kids. Anyhow, the two parties met, and Chandler took command once again. The story became interesting as Dr. Vellek was trying to take the control of seeds and produce a mind-controlling food. This time, Chandler and the crew had to fight and outsmart three enemy ships, sometimes at the same time. We can see many strategic decisions and Naval battles here.

Season 05

After a few years of global pandemics, a new enemy had emerged. A Colombian revolutionary, Gustavo Barros, formed the Gran Colombian Empire, uniting many Latin American countries against the USA.

At the start of the season, they launched an air attack on the US fleet in a ceremony, leaving thousands of officers and civilians killed. Meanwhile, a cyberattack also occurred, disabling the electronics. So, the war officially started, and we see many intense naval and land battles along the way. So, how did they survive it?
