Introduction:

The Directorate of Archives and Libraries, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is one of the important cultural spots in Peshawar,located on main saddar road,right beside peshawar museum. This place keeps the history of the province safe. It stores old documents, newspapers, books, maps, and also runs public Libraries in many cities of KPK.

Short History:

1946: The British started the Central Record Office in Victoria Memorial Hall(today's Peshawar museum). It's job was to keep official records safe.

The first incharge was Prof. S. M. Jaffar. He worked hard to bring important documents from Delhi before Partition.

1973: The office was shifted to Shahi Bagh.

1985: Moved to Benevolent Fund Building.

1990: Finally moved to its own building on main Saddar.

1992: Libraries were added, and the name changed to Directorate of Archives and Libraries.

What you can find here:

Books:

The peshawar public Library has more than 140,000 books.

Old newspapers:

some more than 100 years old.

Government records:

old files, reports, and gazettes.

Maps and Microfilms:

rare collections of history.

Letters and Manuscripts:

important personal and official writings.

. It runs many public libraries in many districts like abbotabad, mardan, swat, DI khan, bannu, haripur, swabi, kohat, timergara, chitral etc.

Tip:

Carry your ID card. Call before visiting if you need special files.

Good Plan:

visit the Peshawar museum and this Directorate together in one trip as both are side by side.

Why it Is important?

It saves the history for the next generation.
It gives material for students, writers, and researchers.
It promotes reading culture by running libraries across the province.

The Directorate of Archives and Libraries, KPK plays a vital role in preserving collective memory and access to knowledge across the province.
