###

Good day everyone. I believe you all are doing great. This contest on skill by @mesola reminds me when I'm being forced by my mum to learn a skill.

When I finished secondary school as a young girl, my mum suggested I should learn hairstyling. She said is good for a girl to have skill especially in our country that unemployment is on the increase. That having a skill can feed you when the government cannot provide job even after graduating from tertiary institution.

I refused to learn the skill but opted to work in order to earn money. I started working as a receptionist in a dental clinic for five months then quit the job when the jamb form came out. They enrolled me in a jamb centre for lessons in preparation for the jamb exam. The exam came and passed and I started staying at home waiting to be accepted in the university of my choice.

My mum did not even inform me when she went and paid for me to learn the hairstyling skill. I had no option than to start going to the hair tyling shop so that the money will not be in vain.

I learned the skill for three months before I got admitted to the tertiary institution and that was how I left the skill acquisition to start schooling. I'm still not perfect in the act of hairstyling when I left but my mum made it her duty that I'm the only one plaiting her hair, no matter how badly my work looks she will be ok with it. With constant practice my work start becoming neat.

Did the skill really helped me when I'm jobless? Yes it did. When I finished my mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps job for the government, no employment so I started making wigs(both braided and weavon wigs). I earned money from the wig making but stopped when my husband doesn’t like the line of the business.

Is the skill still helpful to me? Yes, it's still helps me to save some money. You can see from the picture that I'm the one plaiting my daughter hair.

So this is how a skill I rejected has been so beneficial to me.

I hereby norminate @nsijoro , @daprado1999 and @zhanavic69 to participate in this contest.
